As my mother drove us home, I clued her in on Jane's horrible experiences after finding her daughter pregnant. âI mean, Mom, wouldnât you want to murder Dad if he did that to you?â
âI would come damn close; excuse my language. That poor woman.â
âJane said she was telling me everything to warn me. I donât take pills, so nobody needs to worry about that, but as for picking the wrong guy? After hearing Jane's story, Iâd rather be single for the rest of my life. Iâm almost too scared to ever fall in love, even if it is with my best friend. And if Iâm being honest, look at you and Dad. You both talk about divorce all the time. And look at Caleb and me. We fought all the time too. I donât want that with Matt. My biggest fear is losing what we have. But at the same time, I donât want to close that door with Matt just yet.â
âSo, no new feelings about Matt yet?â
âHow can I explore any feelings when I never see him? Iâm grounded, remember? And at school, with all the Caleb drama, we barely hang out.â
âGotcha.â
âAnd speaking of which, how much longer am I grounded?â
âYouâre lucky we didnât ground you for life. You only have a couple more weeks left.â
I crossed my arms and sulked deeper into my seat. âItâs as if you guys think I did the unthinkable. I'm literally a normal teenager. Donât tell me you didnât do anything crazy when you were younger.â
My mother parked in our driveway before looking at me. âSure, I did a lot of things I shouldnât have. Thatâs why I want to steer you toward a better road than I chose for myself.â
âBut answer my question; what was the worst thing you did as a teenager?â
âI plead the fifth. Only for now.â
âAre you serious? Why canât you tell me?â
âBecause some people donât want to tell their story until they feel good and ready,â she huffed.
âWhy are you getting all upset? Jane had no problem telling me all the crazy stuff she went through. And how bad can it be? I wonât judge you or do whatever you are worried about.â My mother rested her head on the steering wheel, and I sensed it wasnât good. âMom. What?â
âI know you wonât judge me, Sam. I just ⦠I donât talk about it because I am ashamed.â
âAshamed? Mom, people make mistakes. Itâs life. And also, maybe if you got whatever it is off your chest, youâd feel lighter. Trust me; Look how unhealthy it is for Jane to bottle up all her regrets. Sheâs just now opening up, which is a good thing, in my opinion.â
There were tears in my motherâs eyes when she finally looked up. âWhen you were talking about Janeâs daughter, that hit a note for me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause Sam, I was Janeâs daughter once.â
âWait. What? Janeâs my grandmother?â
âNo. No. I, too, had a baby when I was fourteen, like Janeâs daughter. But my parents made me give my baby up, which has always eaten at me.
